This post started out as a long reflection of how I began working for myself, but I’ve re-written it after reading Jenny How’s post on her blog.

Life is a roller coaster. It’s a kaleidoscope of exhilaration, fear, anxiety, joy, hope and sorrow. Reading Jenny’s introduction of herself and her recent post reminded me of these words from a song. They’ve been stuck in my head for over 25 years and I’ve repeated them to anyone and everyone who has ever faced a problem in life. See the words of the song after jump :

When God closes a door,
He opens a window, a window,
He opens a window so I can see,
He’s working it out,
The very best for me.

Working from home has meant so much more than just personal freedom. I am able to spend precious time with my kids Sam and Sara. I get to take them to and from school. I get to have lunch with them, talking noisily about their day in school. I get to tuck them in for their afternoon nap or steal a couple of minutes from work to have a rowdy pillow fight. On hot days, I get to jump into the kiddie pool with them and let them bully me.

However, the opportunity to work at home came disguised as a terrible problem. Four years ago, the company I worked for was in grave financial difficulties. Seriously, it was during that fearful and difficult period in life that my hair greyed. Looking back now, that episode was merely God closing the door on a chapter of life and opening a window to a thousand opportunities. I am now infinitely thankful for that painful storm four years ago. That storm was a prelude to the blooming of the home business owner, blogger and webpreneur in me.

Whatever your faith, believe that problems are the painful birth of new opportunities. Keep the faith. Problems are opportunities in disguise. If you know someone who needs a word of encouragement right now, send this eCard to them :

I’d like to encourage you to visit Jenny’s blog too and as you do, remember that Problems ARE Opportunities in Disguise.
